💡 Upgrading from HD to FHD? If your original screen is 1366×768 (HD), you can upgrade to a FHD panel using any of the above. The existing LCD cable supports both resolutions — no cable swap needed.

⚠️ Before ordering: Confirm your current panel model. Open the lid slightly and shine a flashlight at the bottom edge of the screen bezel — the panel model number sticker is usually visible on the metal frame. Match it to your replacement choice.


Safety Warnings

⚠️ Power off completely — do not just close the lid. Hold power button 5 seconds if needed.

⚠️ Remove the battery before disconnecting any cables. ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 has an internal battery — there is a battery disconnect option in BIOS (see Step 2).

⚠️ Never force the bezel — it clips on with plastic tabs. Forcing it cracks the bezel permanently.

⚠️ Handle the display cable gently — it is a thin ZIF (zero insertion force) ribbon. Pulling it at an angle tears it.

⚠️ ESD precaution — touch a grounded metal surface or wear an anti-static wrist strap before handling the new panel.


Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 — Disable the built-in battery

Why: The ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 has a non-removable internal battery. Lenovo provides a BIOS option to safely disconnect it before service.

  1. Power on the laptop normally
  2. Immediately press F1 repeatedly to enter BIOS (ThinkPad Setup)
  3. Navigate to Config → Power → Disable Built-in Battery
  4. Press Enter to confirm — the laptop will power off automatically
  5. The battery is now safely disconnected

✅ You can now work safely without risk of electrical shorts.

Step 2 — Remove the bottom panel

  1. Place the laptop upside down on a soft surface (use a microfibre cloth to protect the screen underneath)
  2. Locate the 5 Phillips #0 screws on the bottom panel — they are captive screws (they won't fall out when loose, just turn until you feel resistance stop)
  3. Insert a plastic pry tool into the seam between the bottom panel and chassis, starting at a rear corner
  4. Work the pick around all four edges — you will hear/feel clips releasing
  5. Lift the bottom panel away and set aside

⚠️ The screws are captive — do not try to pull them all the way out. Turn until loose and leave them in the panel.

Step 3 — Locate and identify the LCD cable

  1. With the bottom panel removed, you can see the main board, battery, and SSD
  2. The LCD cable runs from the motherboard up through the left hinge into the display assembly
  3. You do NOT need to disconnect it from the motherboard end — you will disconnect it from the screen end in Step 6
  4. Take a moment to visually trace the cable path so you know how to re-route it later

Step 4 — Open the display assembly and remove the bezel

  1. Flip the laptop right-side up and open the lid fully (180 degrees flat if possible)
  2. Starting at a bottom corner of the screen bezel, insert a plastic pick between the bezel and the display chassis
  3. Gently work the pick along the bottom edge first — you will hear clips releasing every 2–3 cm
  4. Continue along both side edges
  5. Finish at the top edge — be extra careful near the webcam module at the top centre
  6. Once all clips are released, carefully lift the bezel off — it is held by clips only, no screws

⚠️ If a section resists, do not force it — move the pick closer to that spot and try again. Forcing cracks the bezel plastic.

⚠️ Near the webcam (top centre), slow down. There is a thin webcam cable just behind the bezel — do not snag it.

Step 5 — Remove the screen mounting screws

  1. With the bezel removed, the screen panel is now visible — held by a metal frame screwed to the display chassis
  2. Locate the 4 Phillips #0 screws on the metal brackets — 2 on the left side, 2 on the right side of the panel
  3. Remove all 4 screws and set aside safely (use a magnetic tray or tape them to the work surface)
  4. Carefully tilt the top of the panel forward toward you — like opening a book forward
  5. Rest the panel face-down on the keyboard (place the microfibre cloth first to protect both surfaces)

Step 6 — Disconnect the LCD cable

This is the most critical step — be slow and deliberate.

  1. With the panel face-down on the keyboard, look at the back of the panel — you will see a flat ribbon cable connected to a small circuit board at the bottom of the panel
  2. The cable is held by a small piece of black adhesive tape — carefully peel it back (do not discard it — you will reuse it)
  3. The cable connector is a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) type:
    • Locate the small flip-up locking tab on the connector
    • Use a fingernail or a spudger tip to gently flip the locking tab upward (it rotates 90°)
    • Once unlocked, the ribbon cable slides straight out — do NOT pull at an angle
  4. Set the old panel aside

⚠️ If the cable does not slide out easily after unlocking, stop and check the locking tab again. Forcing a locked ZIF connector tears the cable.

Step 7 — Connect the new screen

  1. Take the new replacement panel out of its packaging — handle it by the edges only, do not touch the screen surface
  2. Place the new panel face-down on the keyboard (same orientation as the old one)
  3. Slide the ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the back of the new panel — it should slide in smoothly with no force
  4. Press the locking tab back down (rotate 90° until it clicks flat) to secure the cable
  5. Re-apply the black adhesive tape over the connector to hold the cable in place

✅ Give the cable a gentle tug to confirm it is locked — it should not move.

Step 8 — Test before closing up

Always test before reassembling — saves you from opening it again.

  1. Carefully tilt the new panel upright (lean it against something steady, or have someone hold it)
  2. Reconnect the battery: power on the laptop (the BIOS battery disable resets after each boot)
  3. The screen should light up during boot
  4. Check for: correct brightness, no lines, no dead zones, full colour
  5. If anything looks wrong — power off and check the cable connection before continuing
  6. If everything looks good — power off and proceed to reassembly

✅ If the screen is black but you can hear the boot sound, the cable is likely not fully seated — open the lock tab and reinsert.

Step 9 — Reassemble

  1. Screw in the 4 panel bracket screws — snug but do not overtighten (these are small threads)
  2. Re-attach the bezel — align it at the top first, then press firmly along all edges until you hear each clip click in. Work bottom last.
  3. Replace the bottom panel — align the clips around all edges, press down firmly, then tighten the 5 captive screws
  4. Power on the laptop and run a final display check

After the Repair
